The XT600E, introduced in 1990, was Yamaha's lower, easier trail-bike take on the 595 cc air-cooled single: electric start, a low seat for the class and a dry-sump four-valve engine. It is a simple, durable dual-purpose machine that suits commuting as well as gravel tracks, though its soft suspension and modest tank limit serious off-road or long-distance use. From 1995 it gained a 15-litre tank and a tachometer, with clutch operation moved to the right side and the silencer no longer forming part of the rear frame; 1996 also brought a revised fork crown giving slightly more trail.
